How to Set Academic Goals for the New Year

As adults, we tend to get caught up in our own New Year's resolutions, but it is important to involve your children and teach them how to set their own goals. The following tips can help you encourage your child to start setting goals and reaching higher academic objectives.

Tips to Teach Your Child to Start Setting Academic Goals

  • Share your New Year's resolution with your child. Many students and young children become encouraged by what they see others do. Sharing your own goals and New Year's resolutions with your child can be a great way to introduce them to the goal-setting process.
  • Make your child a part of your own goal setting journey. Let your child see you write down your goals and invite them to do the same. Then, as you make your own plan and action steps, teach them to do the same. Doing this together with your child is a great way for both of you to have accountability and can make it more fun.
  • Encourage them to be specific about their goals. It is important that they set specific goals. Start with academic goals. If your child wants to do better in math, help them make that goal more specific by suggesting that they write down something more specific such as, ¨pass every math test with at least a B.¨
  • Help them write down their action steps. Encourage your child to write 3-6 things they must do on a regular basis to help them attain their goal. For example, using the previous example, their actions steps might look like this:
    • 1. Ask questions when I don´t understand something in class.
    • 2. Complete all math homework assignments.
    • 3. Study for my math tests.
    • 4. Get tutoring help in math and learn better study skills.
