Active Parents Make Successful Students

It is very important to be involved in your child's education, and not just as a passive participant at parent-teacher meetings. Here are some steps you can take that are proven to improve your child's performance in school.

Making Time for Your Child

Put specific dates and times on your calendar dedicated to your child. During that period, focus all your love and attention on your child. The more time you spend, the more it pays off.

Read with Your Child

You should read to your child as often as possible. The more you time you spend reading, the more your child is encouraged to read. Implement DEAR times- Drop Everything And Read- when everyone in the family sits and reads quietly for an uninterrupted period.

Build Confidence

Your child should never feel that, "when I do something right, no one remembers, but when I do something wrong, no one forgets." Heap praise and adoration, remind them that you love them and why. Focus on the positive and learn from mistakes rather than punishing for them.

Maintain Discipline

Be an example to your children for how to control their anger by controlling your own. Do not yell. Keep a constant, soft, normal tone of voice, even when upset. If you do not yell at your children, they will not yell at you.

Motivate Your Child

A picture is worth a thousand words, and an example is worth even more. Have your child read biographies of successful people. As they learn about the qualities of these people, they are likely to emulate them.
