Starting the School Year in a New School

Transitioning to a new school can be scary. Whether it is just a new school or your child is moving up a grade level and going from elementary to middle school or to high school, it can be tough. The transition can be nerve wracking, but you can help your child ease into this new experience with the right support and encouragement.

Becoming Familiar With the New Surrounding is Important When Transitioning Into a New School

In order to help your child in the transition into a new school, you need to help them get acquainted with their surroundings ahead of time. If possible, take the time to visit the school before the first day of class and have them walk around so they are aware of what building is where. Encourage them to memorize where common areas are, such as the auditorium, counselor's office, cafeteria and gym. Make sure they know how to get to the new school and back home without a problem. Even if you will be picking them up they should know what bus to take or who to call in the case of an emergency. Practice a few times and make sure that they have someone that can walk home with them or accompany them at least the first days. This can help reduce the anxiety of too many new things all at the same time. For more information on how to help your child ease into the new school year, read this previous post.
