How to Do Well on Standardized Tests

Like them or hate them, standardized tests are a part of all students' academic journey. They may be implemented by the state to measure a school's growth, they may be a part of a teacher's assessments, and they can also be included in entrance requirements for most universities. Since there's no escaping them, the best you can do is prepare your child to do well on them.

Prepare for the Test

Preparing for a test means more than simply studying, although this does play an important role in overall preparations. Be sure your child is aware of their test date and knows what the exam is measuring. Some standardized tests may not have repercussions on their grades, while others will play a large role in their future. As we mentioned, studying plays an important in preparing for the test, so be sure your child is making time to study daily. This will help them avoid cramming the night before, which can cause added stress and anxiety. Finally, your child should get plenty of rest the night before the test and should have a healthy breakfast before heading out the door.

Know How to Make the Most of Your Time

Taking the test itself can be a struggle for students, even if they've studied and know the material well. If your child gets test-taking anxiety, they may not be able to focus and can waste time being stressed out. Teach them different ways to relax while taking the test so that they can stay focused. Time management skills are a must and can make the test more manageable. Encourage your child to focus on the easy question first since these are guaranteed points in their favor. After answering the easy questions, have them go back and figure out the more difficult questions. If they're running out of time and won't get penalized for wrong answers, encourage them to answer all of the questions with at least an educated guess.
